Veterinary Virtual Care in East Gwillimbury, ON

Some pet health questions do not always start with a clear answer. Maybe your pet’s symptoms are mild, you need follow-up guidance after a recent visit, or you are trying to decide whether an in-person exam is needed.

Blackstone Animal Hospital offers veterinary virtual care for select situations where a virtual appointment can help our team provide guidance, review concerns, and discuss next steps. Telemedicine is not right for every pet health issue, but it can be a helpful way to stay connected with our veterinary team when an in-person visit may not be necessary right away.

If you are unsure whether your pet’s concern is appropriate for telemedicine, call (905) 853-4738 or request an appointment. Our team can help determine the best type of visit for your pet.

What Can Telemedicine Be Used for in Veterinary Care?

Telemedicine allows a veterinarian to connect with you virtually to discuss certain pet health concerns, follow-up needs, and ongoing care questions. It may be useful when your pet does not need immediate hands-on treatment, diagnostic testing, or a physical exam that day.

Veterinary virtual care may be helpful for:

  • Follow-up discussions after a recent appointment
  • Progress checks for certain ongoing concerns
  • Medication or treatment plan questions
  • Nutrition and weight management discussions
  • Behaviour or anxiety conversations
  • Senior pet quality-of-life check-ins
  • Minor concerns that may need guidance before booking in person
  • Reviewing photos or videos of certain changes
  • Discussing whether your pet should be seen at the hospital

Some concerns still need an in-person visit. If your pet is painful, weak, not eating, vomiting repeatedly, having trouble breathing, unable to urinate, injured, or acting very abnormal, please call us right away so we can guide you appropriately.

What Happens During a Telemedicine Appointment?

A telemedicine appointment is a scheduled virtual visit with a veterinarian. Before the appointment, we may ask you to share your pet’s symptoms, recent photos or videos, current medications, and any changes you have noticed at home.

During the appointment, your veterinarian may ask about:

  • When symptoms started
  • Appetite, thirst, and energy level
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, or bathroom changes
  • Current medications or supplements
  • Recent travel, boarding, grooming, or diet changes
  • Behaviour, mobility, or comfort changes
  • Photos or videos related to your concern

Your veterinarian will talk through what may be happening, what can be monitored at home, and whether your pet should be seen in person. If hands-on care, testing, imaging, or urgent treatment is needed, we will recommend an in-hospital appointment.

What Happens After a Virtual Visit?

After your telemedicine appointment, you should have a clearer plan for what to do next. This may include monitoring instructions, home care guidance, a follow-up appointment, or a recommendation to bring your pet in for an exam.

Depending on your pet’s needs, next steps may include:

  • Continued monitoring at home
  • Scheduling an in-person exam
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Changes to an existing care plan
  • Follow-up communication with our team
  • Referral to urgent or emergency care when needed

If your pet’s symptoms change or worsen after the virtual visit, please contact us. A concern that starts as mild can become more urgent, and we want to make sure your pet receives the right level of care.
